HEALTHY HOME TIP: TESTING A SHOWER'S HOT WATER USAGE
If you have a lined bag, such as the one Jo has above, hold it under the showerhead and turn the shower on to the temperature you typically set it to, hold it there for five seconds. The lines on the bag indicates the flow rate of your shower.
If you don’t have this bag, you can use any normal bucket from around your house. A standard bucket holds 9 to 10 litres. Place the bucket under the water and turn your shower on, just how you would if you're about to get in, and let it run for one minute.
Your bucket hasn’t filled up? Great! This is an efficient shower as your flow rate is less than 9 or 10 litres per minute.
Your bucket is full but not overflowing? No worries! This is an okay shower as it uses around 9 to 10 litres of water per minute.
Your bucket has overflowed? Not ideal… This is an inefficient shower as it uses more than 9 or 10 litres per minute. You would benefit from installing a flow restrictor or changing your shower head to a low flow model to reduce your hot water usage.
